( he doesn't get lost. that wasn't really a huge concern for him but he knows it's a possibility with how everything feels unfamiliar and almost backwards. he doesn't like it but he knows the only way to change that is to explore, map the region in his head and keep moving.
it doesn't take matt too long to get there and once he finds the place, hears the sounds of working inside, he steps up to the door and pushes it open slightly. )
Hello? It's...Matthew Murdock.
( he stays where he is until he hears the footfalls of someone approaching and waits to be greeted before stepping inside further. )
(They had been in a different workshop until recently so it was a process to move everything over, and also to add anything new they had done until then. Jayce has big plans for Rio Enterprises, as big as you can in a world not yours, so he's been figuring out the details while letting Viktor focus mainly on his own major project. There are not that many boxes left but enough he didn't feel comfortable suggesting a blind man walk in. He did push them to the sides though after talking to Matt.)
Hi, hold on!
(Jayce has a very strong voice that has a way of carrying so he is deep within the workshop but still able to be heard easily. He is simply picking up a few of his spare staffs and collapsible items to put in his workstation. The workshop smells like steel, fresh parchment, and chalk. It's an inventor's shop. Only a few seconds later he comes closer and smiles despite knowing Matt can't see him, opening the door.)
Hello Mr. Murdock, please come in. It's a straight shot forward, I moved everything out of your way. Take about thirty steps in and you'll be in my area, I have a few temporary options for you to use right now.
(Jayce had to adjust the top of the canes he used for Viktor since Matt doesn't need a cane, he needs a walking stick, but they are made of very good material and can easily be repurposed.)
My partner is the same height as you, and I made him extra canes.
( the care and concern for his well being is appreciated. he still holds a hand out almost instinctively, having left the branch outside the workshop, just to make sure he doesn't bump into anything important.
he counts to thirty in his head while his senses takes in the smells of metal and chalk, of work and heat, that he knows should be around in a shop that builds things such as walking sticks.
he keeps going until he's almost positive he's in the right spot and he stops, turning in a circle to take it all in before he tips his head in jayce's direction. )
Was it hard to get a business like this set up here? I know there's permits and down payments and all sorts of other things where I'm from so I'm curious.
No problem, I'm Jayce, nice to officially meet you.
(Jayce heads over to said workstation to pick through what he had for now. He can only imagine how much more confusing this entire situation would be being blind on top of everything else. Matt can hear him nearby with shuffles of papers and then picking up something metal.)
Not really. I started out working with the best blacksmith in town and she helped get me going, and she's been allowing me to keep using her forge in exchange for a percentage of what's sold. So it ended up pretty good word of mouth plus making things people want. Since we are selling out of the workshop that we're renting, they didn't give me trouble with permits.
(Jayce figures that they don't mind in part because they might be eying him and Viktor to make things for them in time. The government, the military. They haven't said so yet, but he has a lot of experience with it. For now they are keeping a close eye, he knows that much. He and Viktor are making a splash in inventing and also at the academy, but it's been rewarding. They didn't get to be paid or get credit quite the same way as when they were working for the Council.
Matt can't see him but Jayce is a very tall man at 6'4 so he can probably hear where he's at, and he has a very strong and clear voice, he's not a mumbler. )
Okay so I have two options you can use for now. One has the top of a cane like Viktor prefers, he needs to lean more heavily on it. It might not be as useful for you. I also have one without the top, just a straight up cane. Probably better than a stick.
(Jayce puts both of them in question by Matt's hands so he can take them. He would be able to tell the difference right away, obviously, and in both cases, they are very sturdy and made of steel. He made these with Viktor in mind so they had a lot of thought.)
( while jayce tells him about the history of the place, about how he got started, matt listens for the sounds that come at him from jayce's feet on the ground, the way his voice bounces off the walls, and the various instruments in the room that he uses to do what he does.
he stands a few feet away, hands at his sides as he starts to form a mental picture in his head of where he's at. )
I don't need anything to take my weight. It's more to make sure I know what's in front of me so I don't step off any errant curbs or run into anyone that doesn't want me to fall into their backs.
Okay try the cane without the head for now. It'll definitely be better than a stick.
(Jayce puts it in Matt's grasp since he knows he can't blindly offer it. It's a little taller than probably what Matt is used to, but it will probably do in a pinch, and it is very sturdy and solid. Jayce moves over to his workspace for a moment, at his desk.)
I read what you said to Viktor about what you used before, collapsible items are a family trademark. I have some trigger collapsible staffs and swords currently, but what you're talking about will be easier for sure.
(Collapsible tools are the Talis trademark, but Jayce can do it for just about anything with the right springs and material. He has been working on them since he got here, and they've gone over well since he started selling them. He doesn't think it'll be helpful to Matt's condition though.)
You said half your height and folded in three places, right?
(Matt can hear the scratching noise of him writing it down. What he doesn't see is that Jayce has already sketched it out, he usually draws his schematics before he makes them so he can already have notes about what to do.)
If you want to use that one for now, I'll fast track the other one, I can get it to you in probably three days, if that's okay?
(It would be easier to simply make a cane for him, but since he wants the folding capability, it'll require a little more precision.)
( when jayce presses the cane into his hand, matt lifts it, feeling its weight before he puts it down in front of him and sweeps it back and forth, testing it out. it's a good weight and solid. it's not exactly familiar but it's close enough and he nods.
he switches hands, testing it in both left and right before making an affirmative sound. it's good, he likes it. )
Yeah, exactly. I can use it when I'm out walking but if I'm somewhere else where it's not needed, I can fold it down, stick it my back or jacket pocket, even.
( and it did make a good weapon in a pinch. not his preference but it works. )
I don't think Cadens is as crowded as where I'm from so I shouldn't have to worry about knocking it into people as I'm outside but I need to get familiar with this place so I expect I'll be walking a lot.
I get that. It's why my family created collapsible tools in the first place, it makes things more convenient for people to use.
(Their success eventually led them to have a lesser house designation which his father was very proud about, but Jayce struggled with more considering lesser houses meant nothing in the academy. He would always be from a working family, but he made that into a successful invention too.
He watches Matt testing it out, smiling. While he is a businessman, required at times to get where he needs to be here, he is more altruistic by nature. He likes doing nice things for other people with no strings attached.)
Oh, you're from New York too, right? I think I read that on your post. I've heard about it from others, it sounds giant. The Free Cities is spread out through a few locations so the overall population is over half a million but that's not in any one city.
(Jayce has asked around, he loves going to the museum and the libraries here, so sometimes he reads about Free Cities history just because.)
Can you show me where on your body you want the full walking stick to go to? I can estimate the places it needs to fold, I want to make sure it's comfortable.
I've never heard of Hell. It's something to do with your religion?
( Piltover tends to be kind of skeptical about religion, being a purely scientific city of progress. He knows there are religions all over their world and even the Zaunites have their versions of it, but it's not something he knows anything about. He is not oblivious to the concepts of beliefs other people might not understand though. For him, that had been magic, long before anyone in his city would accept it.
On his end, Jayce puts a hand up in the air to where Matt is and does a very quick calculation, writing it down on his notebook. He draws a stick and then makes notches where he thinks it should fold. Pretty simple. )
I'll make it with strong steel so it'll be sturdy, my boyfriend had a terrible one when he got here, these aren't the easiest roads.
( He is used to sleeker floors and not so much sand, which he hates. )
I don't know if you've done magic before, but everyone has access to it here. I would recommend learning some earth-based spells, it might help you kind of visualize the ground.
( matt laughs because it feels like he's been explaining this more in this place than he has ever before. he's taken for granted that everyone knows what it is and when in a place where that isn't true, he flounders a bit. )
Basically, where I come from, there are said to be places where people go after they die. If they've been a good person, they go to a place called Heaven. And if they weren't, Hell. Can't tell you if that's true or not because I'm not dead but —
( it's what people believe. he thinks he has an idea of where he's going to go when that happens.
but, he shakes his head, dismissing those thoughts and then laughs at jayce's mention of magic. )
Never done magic before but I've heard that it's something I'll have access to. I don't know how that's going to go for me.
Oh, I see, why in the world would they call a location Hell's Kitchen in that case?
( Jayce feels like it inherently has to be rude, doesn't it? If it is a location compared to the place where bad people go when they die, yikes. He thinks there are probably versions of that mindset and religion in his world, somewhere. It's simplistic but there is a sort of sense to it. You tell people to be good and they do that for a reward in death. Jayce wishes sometimes he believed in an afterlife, if only to imagine what might happen if Viktor did leave him. Finding him again after death, it's a very alluring concept. Not one Jayce believes, but he gets it. )
There are different types of magic, I'm pretty new to it myself. The easiest kinds require you to just learn a spell and speak it enough times until it works.
( Jayce has learned many of those! He's extremely good at memorizing things so academic magic came very naturally, even if Free Cities isn't as into it as New Magic. )
You'll also get something from your first Horizon visit. Everyone comes out of it with some kind of ability, although it's not always obvious right away.
And I've already been to Horizon so I guess I should be on the lookout for that.
( matt isn't really sure how he feels about it either. he's never felt the need to be magic or learn magic or anything like it but magic seems to be all around him in here in the people that he knows and how the worlds work.
it's...strange to know that he might be involved with it sooner rather than later. he hums a bit. )
Yes, don't be surprised if you end up with several unexpected gifts. I don't think anyone knows why exactly it happens, only that sometimes we suddenly get them.
( It's magic. And the Singularity. Jayce hasn't learned of his newest ability since nothing has happened to set it off yet, but he has trained in several other spells and magic in Cadens. It's what he's always dreamed of. He assumes they might have a way for blind people to learn the same magic, but that is something Matt would have to talk to the academy or libraries about. They're very helpful. )
I came out with natural healing magic, no spell required. It is exactly what I would have asked for, so I'm not sure if the Singularity just granted my unspoken wish.
( Jayce was already interested in medicine and healing before that for Viktor, but the fact he came out of the Horizon already powered was hugely helpful. He never thought of himself as a natural healer, but now it seems he really is. And he enjoys it, it feels right, somehow.)
But you still have to put the work in to strengthen what you're given, like with any skill I guess. I've spent months practicing, now I'm pretty good at it. It's ... really beautiful, actually.
( He sounds wistful and a little bit in love, which might sound strange for something general like magic, but that's Jayce.)
It's never been something that I wanted to do because I just thought I couldn't.
( so, he'd put it out of sight, out of mind. when everything started happening in new york, he couldn't really say he didn't believe in magic but it was separate from him, something he couldn't do.
until now. even though he hasn't figured out what skills he might end up with, just being able to create things in the horizon is more than he's ever done before. )
